All You Need To Know About Kaduna Tremor and What to do When it Happens

Earth tremor is an involuntary movement of earth surface caused by stress in the underground rocks. When this happens things at the surface of the earth like buildings, trees and other high standing structures can collapse causing damages to properties and injuries to people.

Since the earth tremor that shook some part of Kaduna State, the people of Kaduna State have been living in fear, particularly those living in or near Qei and Jaba area of Jaba Local Government Area of the state and those living in Kwoi and surrounding villages of Nok, Sanbah and Chori in Jama Local Government Area of Kaduna State.


All you need to know about the tremor

1- The first shaking occurred at 12:28:16.50 seconds GMT on Sunday 11th September, 2016 and the event had an epicentre located Latitude 9.825N and Longitude 7.885 E while Local Magnitude was 2.6 and Moment Magnitude was 3.0 and Focal Depth was 10km.

2- The second event occurred on Monday 12th September, 2016 at 03:10:48.80 seconds (GMT) with Local Magnitude of 2.6 and Moment Magnitude of 2.9 with Focal Depth of 10km while the epicentre was Latitude 10.879N and Longitude 7.188E.

3- The third took place on Monday 12th September at 03:11:20.00 seconds (GMT) located at an epicentre of Latitude 9.927N and Longitude 7.297E, Local Magnitude 2.9 and Moment Magnitude 3.0.

4- There are reports of cracks on walls of buildings, falling off of ceiling fans and other items.

5- The incident is the first of it’s kind in the State

6- This tremor cannot not lead to earthquake

How to prevent loses and casualties during tremor or land shaking

1- Government should investigate and locate prone areas and quickly give early warning for people to vacate those areas.

2- High rising buildings should not be built in prone areas, especially where such things are likely to happen.

3- A station should be put there by government to monitor and pick quickly events and occurrences like earth tremor

4- Public should always adhere strictly to building regulations so that they design structures that can withstand earth tremors and even earthquakes,”

5- People should keep fire extinguisher, first aid kit, battery-powered radio, flashlight, and extra batteries at home. Having first aid skills is also important not only in preparation for earth quakes but also our daily lives.

6- Turning off the gas, water, and electricity is important to ensure no sparks that may lead to a fire are formed.


7- Offload shelves with heavy objects which would fall and cause injury during the such tremor or earth shaking. Matches, candles, or any flame should be avoided when this is happening.

8- People are advised to stay calm during tremors.

9- If you indoors, stand against a wall near the centre of the building, stand in a doorway, or crawl under heavy furniture Stay away from windows and outside doors

10- Those outdoors should stay in the open away from power lines or anything that might fall and stay away from buildings

11- If you in a car, stop and stay inside the car until the earth tremor or shaking stops. After the tremor check yourself and others for injuries. Provide first aid for anyone who needs it.

12- Check water, gas, and electric lines for damage. If any are damaged, shut off the valves. Check for the smell of gas. If you smell it, open all the windows and doors, leave immediately, and report it to the authorities.

13- Turn on the radio. Don’t use the phone unless it’s an emergency because with the recent technology upgrades phones with flickering lights produce radiations that could spark a fire.
