The Deception of Major Victory

Scripture Reference:

He said ‘Be sober, be vigilant; because of your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour’ (1 Peter 5:8).

Be very careful when something positive happens in your life that so excites you. That’s when most people are most vulnerable and likely to fall into the ditches of the enemy. He is always lurking around the corner at that time. When something good happens in your life, celebrate God but be sober and vigilant; give the enemy no foothold around your life. After a major victory, you could fast the following day to keep the wolves away. Because that’s the time most of us are so relaxed and unwatchful.

It happens many times in football. Perhaps a team just scored a goal and is so overly overwhelmed with joy, celebrating their goal. Before you could say ‘Jack!’ the opponent just equalizes them. A team is most vulnerable after their goal.

It was after the major victory over Jericho that Joshua and the host of Israel set out to fight Ai. They didn’t even pray because the city was so small compared to Jericho. You know, they fasted, prayed, sang and shouted for 7 days to bring down Jericho and just felt it should be a walk-over. They were so disappointed because of Achan’s mistake. Perhaps if they had been soberer they could have been able to figure out that there was a problem before they hit the battlefront.
Be sober and vigilant. Give the enemy no advantage in your life.

Daily digest: Joshua 7:1-26.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for every victory you won on my behalf. I acknowledge you as the doer. Help me not take the glory that belongs to you in Jesus name. Amen
