Kill any Cow Found Roaming Abuja Streets - Senate Orders

Category: Latest Nigeria News

The Senate has ordered that cows found roaming the Federal Capital Territory should be slaughtered. This followed the continuous movement of cows in the city centre despite several warnings by the Federal Capital Territory Authorities (FCTA). The directive was handed down to the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Alhaji Mohammed Bello, when he appeared before the Senate committee on FCT, on Monday September 26, Vanguard reports.

A week ago, the FCTA directed law enforcement agencies to enforce a total ban on cattle grazing, begging, street hawking and commercial motorcycle (Okada) in the FCT. The chairman of the committee, Senator Dino Melaye, (APC, Kogi West), expressed disappointment at the manner Fulani herdsmen defy the order that they should not move their cows in the capital city. He said it was annoying and embarrassing that despite the ban placed on cattle grazing in FCT by FCTA, some stubborn herdsmen were still moving cows along and across highways within the metropolis.

“The Senate is not happy at how herdsmen continue to move their cows across the city centre, which we are aware you had given directive against some time ago. “From now on, get knives and ask your men to slaughter cows found in the capital city or prosecute herdsmen seen with cows in the city centre with a fine of N50,000 per cow. This order must be carried out,” Melaye told the minister. Fulani herdsmen have been causing havoc in various communities across the nation. Three residents of Dogon Daji village were recently killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Antang village at the Godogodo axis in Jema’a local government area of Kaduna state.
