Towards eradicating menace of campus cultism, University of Ibadan Anti-Cultism Campaign Committee has organized a sensitization programme with an assurance from the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Folorunso Adewole that the university would leave no stone unturned in order to ensure a safe and secured learning environment.

Speaking at the sensitization programme organized for the Provost, Deans, Directors, Heads of Department, Hall Wardens and Religious Leaders, the VC noted that cultism which had almost been forgotten in UI in the last 10 years was beginning to rear its ugly head with the resuscitation of students’ unionism.

Prof. Adewole disclosed that reports reaching the Management indicated that some students were beginning to re-enact the anti-social behavior of the past by forming themselves into cultism which is against the norms in UI, pointing out that the university would do everything possible to confront the menace.

“We shall strengthen the security apparatus, we will increase surveillance across the campus and we shall also improve the lighting situation just as intelligence gathering will be given top priority. We should be able to work in UI without fear of intimidation or harassment”, the VC said.

We need information, people should be ready to give us information that can help us to do this job”, he stated.

According to Dr. Onuka, “our strategy is not combative, but largely educative and enlightening. We are going to target students as our main focus, while screening every member of staff to ensure that nobody encourages cultism”

In his own contributions, the immediate past Chairman of the committee, Emeritus Prof. Muyiwa Awe remarked that cultism was spiritual and it must be approached spiritually, saying it was the devil that hijacked campus cultism for devilish purpose.
