Pearls of Love (Episode 18)

So some years back, while we were still in school, I had returned from a hectic lecture, tired and looking hungry. I met Ann in the room; I can’t remember now, but I think she didn’t have lectures that day.

“Hi darling, you look very tired', she said, as she helped with my suit.

“I'm really tired', I told her

“Oh, Sorry ', she said.

“I just cooked, I'm sure you'll like to eat now"

I told her I'd preferred to rest first, on hitting the bed, I slept off. When I later woke, she served the food and we both ate. I noticed she was keeping to herself, but she tried covering up like nothing was wrong, but now I had known her too well to be deceived. Women always have one thing or the other bothering them all the time. So I decided not to bother her with her thinking.

We later went out to the movies that night, it didn't make much difference, and I think it would have been better if we had just stayed back because the movie was not even interesting. We later returned to our room, but she was still all cold. When I could no longer stand her quietness, I asked her;

“Ann what's the problem with you?'

“Dan nothing', she replied in a very harsh tone.

“You know, this is just how you start," I told her.

She didn't answer. She went over to the bed and lay down. I watched her as she took off her clothes changed into her night gown, slipped under the blanket, faced the wall, and...

“Goodnight', she said.

What was wrong with her? I wondered. I really wondered. I changed into pajamas and went to bed beside her.

“Ann, what's the problem?' I asked pulling her to myself. She was almost as stiff as a stone and didn't answer. I thought maybe if I tried playing with her body maybe she would yield, and so I tickled her where I knew she liked being touched, but she was just indifferent. I started playing with her lips using my fingers, but as if those ones were dead as a corpse of ten days. I squeezed one of her breasts and she jumped out of the bed. And shouted!

“Who is Nevan?'

Damn! I was shocked. I wasn't sure if I heard her well.

“Who is what?" I asked

“Nevan', she replied.

“What do you mean?" I asked her sitting up.

“Exactly what you heard. See Dan I don't know what you are up to. The other time I saw a letter one girl wrote to you refusing to go out with you”.

“Why bring that up now?' I asked, getting really irritated and angry.

“Why won't I bring it up-en, why won't I?'

“That letter was written before I knew you and you know'.

“And yet you still communicate, both you and the girl even after knowing me and yet you tell me that both of you are just friends. You didn't say you asked-her-out'.

“See Ann, we sorted this things out then, Cynthia was my good friend. I liked her but we lost contact. When she discovered where I was, she wrote to me. I wrote back to her and told her how I felt about her all the time we were friends. She told me in the letter you read that it would not be possible now for me and her to be lovers that did not stop us from being mail pals. And Ann you and I already sorted this out a long time ago”.

“So, who is Nevan?'

“John's girlfriend', I told her.

“Which John?' she asked.

“The same John you know', I replied.

“So, why is her address appearing so many times in your address book and in fact in all your address book and diary'?

So, this is what all the sulking is about, she had been busy going through my books and reading my diaries. I couldn't answer her question. Nevan, I remember her, even now it was pity I had for her but I translated it to be love.

John, Nevan's boyfriend was our neighbor at a time at the university, John was a very dubious guy, he cheated, duped and stole so many people's things before leaving the school then. Most people thought John was a student but he wasn't actually a student, he was one of these boys who are known to be in school but actually do not have any records with the school authority as students, so by claiming to be student it was easy for them to borrow money and other things from unsuspecting students and run away. Although John was handsome, very good looking, but he was a crook.

John actually duped all his neighbors at the compound I stayed then except me, he made away with many things. It was after he had left that we got to know that he wasn't a bona fide student all the while. Two weeks later, I was in the room alone, it was one of the periods I had the usual quarrel with Ann and she had returned to her room. Nevan had come to visit John her boyfriend, but met his room deserted and so had come to mine to ask what had happened. I was sleeping when she came and I wanted to just tell her that the guy packed but I couldn't lie to her, she looked very innocent and unhappy.

I explained what happened to her. I told her how John had stolen other people's things and had left town. She sat down there crying like a baby, and I was moved. I wasn't good at consoling people, I told her to take things easy that maybe it was the best thing for her. She said I wouldn't understand, that John was like the only person left that she had, though it didn't sound childish to me then, but sure does now, she said her father who was the bread winner of the family, and was killed during an armed robbery attack sometimes back. Their house was burnt down to the foundation during a riot and the rest members of the family were presently scattered around leaving with relatives. It was in this period of crises that she wrote her final exams in the high school and she failed.

She told me about her father's best friend who was also her father's business partner who was supposed to help the family, especially to finance her education, but that the man was only interested in taking her to bed. I wondered why men must always sleep with all women, but I had no answer for my question even up till this day.

She lamented on how life had been harsh on her since the demise of her dad. She cried while she narrated all this ordeals. She said only John had been her source of joy; John was the only person she ever confined in, he was the person that she lost her virginity to and so she had so much hope in him, not for money but for true love. John was her first lover, and was many first in her life. She told me that John had been acting in a strange manner for a while, and that she had always wondered why, and now he had left town without telling her.

I tried all I could to console her. I took her address when she was about to leave and promised to call on her some time. I didn't, for a long time and she came again, at this time I discovered I was having a soft spot for her.

At this time Ann and I were having a serious misunderstanding then, in fact we almost broke-up. This time when Nevan came, she was in the company of someone she introduced as a friend, and I wasn't expecting that, I felt she had already forgotten about John and was already seeing someone else.

A week later, I went to her place, but I couldn't even stay up to five minutes there, she was about going out when I entered. That was the end of my feelings for her. I didn't tell Ann all these, I just told her I took the address so that I could inform her if I heard anything about John.

Now I wondered how she was going to take this case of Rita. She hadn't mentioned it yet. I thought maybe I should tell her first but I felt it wasn't necessary.
