Kano state Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has said that the decision of the Senate of the University of Maiduguri, (Unimaid), to award Honourary degrees to the late Head of State, General Murtala Muhammad and the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, is a huge credit to the state.

He expressed this when the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ibrahim Njodi led management officers visited him on Monday, pointing out that the awards are “a pride not only to the people of the state but to all well-meaning Nigerians”.

Dr. Ganduje said: “Late Gen. Murtala Ramat Muhammad, of blessed memory is a leader and any honour done to him is not just for his family and people of Kano state but for all Nigerians, because Murtala is for all Nigerians.

“If you recall how he was assassinated and the amount of mourning that took place after his death, it was unprecedented. I have never observed in my life any national mourning that could compare to that of late Murtala", the governor stated.

As for Emir Sanusi, the governor described him as a versatile, modern traditional ruler, a highly regarded Islamic scholar and Arabic language expert, with vast understanding of politics, economics and contemporary issues, pointing out that the honour aptly fits the Emir.

Noting that the university has a long history of relationship with Kano state, Governor Ganduje recalled that at one time, the chairman of its Governing Council was a Kano man while the former state governor, Senator Kwankwaso was given an award by the university.

The governor maintained that at the moment, Kano state government is constructing a hostel for Kano students at that university, saying at a personal level, he is happy that two of his daughters graduated from it.
While thanking the university authorities for commiserating with him over the death of his mother and the recent fire outbreaks in some state market in Kano, Governor Ganduje assured that present administration would continue to support the university within limits of its resources.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Njodi said they were at the Governor’s office to sympathy with him over the unfortunate fire incidents that occurred in the state recently and to formally invite him to the 22nd convocation of the institution and its 40th anniversary celebration this month.
