NBA Initiates Legal Action Against Culture Minister, Kenny Ogungbe For Alleged NYSC Certificate Issue

Category: Nigeria News

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Section on Public Interest and Development Law has petitioned the Federal High Court in Abuja to remove Hannatu Musawa, the Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy, from her position, citing alleged violations of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Act.

The organization also urged the court to mandate the NYSC to invalidate the certificates granted to both Musawa and music promoter Kenny Ogungbe, claiming that the issuance of the certificates contradicted the provisions of the NYSC Act Cap N84.

The individuals bringing the lawsuit are John Aikpokpo-Martins, the Chairman of NBA-SPIDEL, and Funmi Adeogun, the Secretary of NBA-SPIDEL.

The plaintiffs claim that the enlistment of Musawa and Ogungbe for the compulsory one-year national youth service, despite being over 30 years of age, was unlawful, illegal, and a violation of patriotism.

They further assert that the alleged national service and the certificates issued by the NYSC to Musawa and Ogungbe are null and void.

The plaintiffs are requesting a declaration stating that Musawa and Ogungbe are not eligible to be employed by any employer or service provider (including the Federal Government of Nigeria) without possessing and presenting their national youth service certificates.

They additionally seek a declaration that the first defendant is ineligible to persist in occupying the prestigious position of the Honorable Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or any public office in the country, having allegedly violated the provisions of Sections 2(1), 12(1), and 13(1) of the National Youth Service Corps Act, Cap. N84, LFN 2004, with blatant impunity.
