What is Generational Curse

Our ancestors sinned, but they have died and we are suffering the punishment they deserved. Lamentations 5: 7

That means generational curse(s) do exist. Generational curses exist over generations, what your ancestor that died in 1912 did can affect you in 2012 if you are not living under the grace of God.

It doesn’t matter whether you are now a Christian or not, you must break such curses on you for you to be free from some things you are going through. Most of the time when you have been praying since you became a child of God in your various religious belief you may not have prayed at anytime to God to help you break generational curses like the way you pray for some other things.

The people of Israel and Judah at this time in the bible suffered the repercussion of idolatry and disobedience to God laws done several hundreds of years before they were born. It was their ancestors that God actually cursed through his prophets, but the curse was on generations.

Possibly you are wondering why you are going through some challenges consistently for over a period of time, and yet you are not a sinner. Maybe you have even been a sinner before but you are now repentant but you are not having the breakthroughs you require, it could be a curse you are suffering.

Curses can come in any form. The people of Judah during this time in Lamentation Chapter 5 were suffering from curses God placed on their ancestor long ago.

Their sufferings included:

1. They were ruled by slaves meanwhile they are princes but now slaves. They have talents, education but those who did not go to school or have great skills like them rules over them (Lamentations 5:8A)

2. Threat to their lives and lack of food. They are threatened by competitors in the little they are able to do, like salary jobs, small trades to the extent that they could lose their lives if not careful (Lamentation 5: 9)

3. There was great hardship to the extent that the famine made their skin black like it was in an oven. They suffer great hardship, to the extent it shows on their skin, it reflects on their lifestyles, shows by the expression on their faces, they are sorrowful, depressed (Lamentations 5: 10)

4. Our enemies rape the women in Jerusalem and the young girls in all the towns of Judah (Lamentations 5:11). They couldn’t protect their wives, daughters and sisters because they were powerless, if they tried they would be killed.

5. Their elders were no longer regarded. They were treated with contempt. (Lamentations 5:12)

They passed through all these degrading circumstances, a period of shame and disgrace because of the curse on their ancestors. A generational curse!

Longman Dictionary defines Curse as a swear word or words that you say because you are angry. A word or sentence used to ask God or a magical power to harm someone.

So you now have a clearer picture of curse is, curse is bad, disfavor, dishonor, disgrace and state of dejection.

Prayer to overcome curse

Lamentations 5: 19-22, “But Lord, you remain the same forever! Your throne continues from generation to generation. Why do you continue to forget us? Why have you abandoned us for so long? Restore us, O Lord, and bring us back to you again! Give us back the joys we once had! Or have you utterly rejected us? Are you angry with us still?”

Pray this prayer as an individual, as a family, a group as a nation. Say to God, plead with him, ask him to help you remove generational curse on you, because you are now a heritage of Christ you have the same blessing that He promised to Abraham, and because His throne continues from generation to generation, His mercy also extend from generation to generation. He should have mercy on you, your family or your nation and God will surely deliver you from any generational curse that has been affecting.

Be willing to follow Him, repent of all your sins, obey His commandments and always do His wills.

Praise God!
