How Many Times Is Normal To Send Text Message To Boyfriend-Girlfriend in a Day?

More than 1.5bn texts are sent every week.
A researcher suggests couples should send each other just one affectionate text message a day. Radhika Sanghani tries it out, but doesn't find the result she expects.

Here is what she has to say:

My boyfriend and I are like most couples. We use WhatsApp to talk to each other throughout the day, sending sporadic messages and updates about our lives. If something funny happens, we tell each other about it in a quick message over lunch. If something bad happens, we send over a simple sad-faced emoji.
Occasionally we have the odd long phone call, but when we’re not hanging out in person, most of our communication is done via text messages. It’s how our relationship functions.

But for the past week, we stopped messaging each other. We only sent each other one single 144-character text message a day. I'm used to sending around 15 messages a day.

We did not stop messaging so regularly because we wanted to. More, I was keen to put to the test the theory by Anna Batho, a Leeds Metropolitan University psychology masters student, who thinks that sending just one affectionate text message a day can significantly improve a relationship.

She said: “What we as student researchers at Leeds Met are hoping to discover is just how much positive difference affectionate text messages can make to our relationships, so that simply put, we can keep the love alive, one text at a time.”

In your own opinion, how many times is normal to send text messages to your boyfriend/girlfriend in a day?
