Supreme Court Judgement: Protesters Besiege INEC, Call For Fresh Guber Poll In Kogi

Protesters yesterday besieged the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, calling for the conduct of a fresh governorship election in Kogi State in compliance with the Supreme Court judgement delivered on January 27, 2012.

The protesters, numbering about 200 under the platform of Association for Justice and Good Governance in Kogi State, displayed placards which read, ‘On Supreme Court judgement of 27/01/12 we stand’, ‘Wada must go’, ‘We demand justice and good governance in Kogi’, ‘INEC must conduct fresh election as ordered by Supreme Court’ among others.

The Supreme Court had declared as illegal the continued stay in office of the governors of Sokoto, Adamawa, Bayelsa, Cross River and Kogi states, ordering INEC to conduct fresh elections in the states.

Briefing newsmen after submitting their protest letter, chairman of the protest group, Umar Goodman Akwu said in order to avoid a vacuum in the administration of those states, the Supreme Court had ordered that the speakers of the State Houses of Assembly be inaugurated, pending the conduct of fresh governorship elections.

He added that while five speakers were inaugurated as acting governors on the same day of the judgement, including that of Kogi State, who was inaugurated by the State chief judge, Justice Nasir Ajanah, Governor Wada, not minding the Supreme Court judgement, was sworn-in by the Customary Court of Appeal judge on the same day.

Akwu said that the Supreme Court, in a ruling dated February 16, 2012, dismissed INEC’s application for the validation of its December 3, 2011 governorship election in Kogi State, adding, “In other words, the Supreme Court ordered INEC to comply with the January 27, 2012 judgement by conducting fresh governorship election in Kogi State.”

“INEC has been served with a copy of the January 27, 2012 Supreme Court order. The people of Kogi State hereby call on the chairman of INEC, Prof Attahiru Jega and the entire leadership of the commission to immediately implement the Supreme Court order by conducting fresh governorship election in Kogi State.

Reacting to the protest, Jacob Edi, special adviser to Governor Idris Wada, said the people of the state have since moved on, adding that the government and people of the state will not be distracted by rabble-rousers.
