What is Sin?

Sin is doing something that is against the Laws given by God to Christians in both the Old and New Testaments of the bible.

The first place where sin was in the bible is in Genesis 4:7, “You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master” (NLT). Here God has already made us understand that we need to what is right, contrary to doing right means sin. He made us understand too that sin should be allowed to be a master over us, meaning that even though we do sin, but we must learn not to dwell in sin, when we sin unknowingly, we must quickly plead for forgiveness of sin and try to live above it, it says we should subdue sin and be its master.

The book of Romans 6: 12-14 says, “When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. Yes, people sinned even before the law was give. But it was not counted as sin because there was no Law to break. Still, everyone died- from the time of Adam to the time of Moses- even those who did not disobey an explicit commandment of God, as Adam did. Now Adam is a symbol, a representation of Christ, who was yet to come” (NLT)
So every man that does wrong now has sin since the time of Moses when God gave Moses the laws. But something else happened when Jesus Christ came into the scene. Romans 5: 18, “Yes, Adam’s one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone. Because one person disobeyed God, many became sinners. But because one other person obeyed God, many will be made righteous” (NLT)

Since human nature is by itself sinful, it means we can easily fall into sin, but “Do not let sin control the way you live, do not give in to sinful desires. Do not let any part of your body become instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God” Romans 5:12-13A.

God’s judgment of sins is tremendous; repentance is the only way to escape this judgment that will come upon all sinners.

Sins listed in the Old Testament include; serving other gods other than God, many worship idols and God has warned that no image or idol must be worshiped. Misusing the name of the Lord is a sin, working on Sabbath day is a sin, the day is meant to be kept holy and for resting, disrespecting one’s parents will cause disfavor and setbacks, a murderer, adulterer, thief, lair, cheat is a sinner. (Read Exodus 20)

Also in the New Testament sins listed include: Wickedness, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behaviors, gossiping, backbiting, and insolence, and pride, haters of God, heartlessness, and forgiveness. (Read Romans chapter 1)
Other bible texts about sin: Genesis 4: 7, Romans 6:12-14, Romans 5:18, Exodus 20 and Romans 1
