Chief Olusegun Obasanjo





Olusegun Matthew Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo, GCFR, born on March 5 1937 in Ogun state, a Yoruba descent.

He was the military Head of States of Nigeria between February 13 1976 to 1 October 1979 and the civilian president from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007.

Obasanjo currently lives in Abeokuta the state capital of Ogun where he holds the traditional titles of the Balogun of the Owu Lineage and the Ekerin Balogun of the Egba clan of Yourbaland.

Olusegun Obasanjo joined the Nigerian Army in 1958. He was promoted to the position of Chief Army Engineer as the Commander of 2 Area command in 1967. He commanded the Army’s 3 Marin commando division in Owerri that brought to the end of the Nigeria civil war.


He became the Chief of Staff of the Supreme Headquarters on 29 July 1975, a number 2 position in the Nigerian leadership then.

Later he became the Military Head of states in 1976 after his boss; General Murtala Mohammed was assassinated in a coup plot led by Col. Dimka.

Obasanjo later stepped down for a civilian president, Alhaji Shehu Shagari in 1979.

In 1999 when Nigeria returned to democracy after 16 years of military dictatorship, he was elected as the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

He again won the same position in 2003 presidential election and was in office until 2007 when he relinquish power to a new elected president, Alhaji Musa Ya’ardua .

The former military Head of states later became the Chairman of the board of trustees of the PDP. He is also a member of the Club de Madrid, a group of more than 80 former leaders of democratic states who are committed to strengthening democratic leadership and governance.

He is also a member of the Africa Progress Panel (APP)

United Nations Secetary-General, Ban Ki-Moon recently appointed Obasanjo as a special envoy to the war- torn Democratic Republic of the Congo.
His first wife is Oluremi (Remi) Obasanjo the mother of Dr. Iyabo Obsanjo-Bello, a former Senator of the Federal Republic.

Lynda, Obasanjo’s second wife was killed by armed men in her car in 1987

His third wife, Stella Obasanjo died on 23 October 2005 after she had a tummy tuck in Spain.

Chief Olusegun Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo is blessed with many children including Dare Obasanjo, a senior Program Manager for Microsoft.
