Pearls of Love (Episode 21)

Appearance sometimes can be deceitful. Some people can wear very expensive clothes, but find but where they live and you’ll be disappointed. While some very rich people who own billions but chose to dress in simple clothes. Looks! I have learnt can be a deceptive tool. And so I decided not to judge Rita based on her appearance even though she was gorgeously dressed, but investigating her properly would be better before making a conclusion about her.

“Since when have you been planning this?’ I asked her.

“Not too long. I think we can help each other’.

“Did you get my mail?’She nodded.

“Yes, but I thought you needed to hear about the proposal’.

I remained quiet for a while, thinking if I was taking the right decisions. I will need to engage a consultant to look into the proposal properly, wondering how Ann was going to react to this. Well, since it was all about business, she shouldn’t be against it, the more business I got the better it was for the family. As much as I loved Ann, interfering with my ambition is not one of the things I liked.

“Where are you putting up?’

“Hotel Chervid’

“You came to town just for this?” I asked.

“Isn’t it worth it?’ she replied.

A lot was going on in my head and subconscious mind.

“Well, I have other things to attend to in town’.

“We will look into your proposal as soon as it is possible and let you”.

“Take your time”. She said and dropped a card on the desk” I will be expecting your call”.

She stood up.

“It’s nice seeing you again’.

It was nice seeing her again.

“Thanks for coming’. I told her.

“I’ll leave now. You can call me anytime”

She emphasized as she went for the door, not looking. That hot shape was still much there.

Ten minutes after she had gone, I was still absorbed in thoughts, thinking of her, the business proposal, and what the future holds for us. I couldn’t think straight and needed a drink.

Associating with Rita was not a problem but somehow I felt it would get more than just business. I think it would be nice to discuss with Ann first to get her approval. I may think she would like it but she may not like it. But it was all for the good of the family.

I went over to the fridge and poured a shot of dry gin, gin gets you steadier than beer does if you don’t take too much of it. I had earlier contemplated taking a beer, but I thought otherwise because it was still office hour. Anybody could come to the office, some people hate perceiving the smell of alcohol, and I could become tipsy, and someone may notice. It is anyway against the office etiquette to drink during work time. I only took beer in office after the day’s work or when I stay up late until night or else a little gin mixed with juice keeps you going when you are a bit tired in the office.

I had so much on my mind and may just need to sleep over my thoughts; I didn’t understand why I felt so uncomfortable about the situation. After all it was just a business proposal, I mean it’s just business, there are no ties to it.

That night when I arrived home, both Ann and the kids weren’t at home, I wondered where they could have gone to and Ann did not tell me anything on phone, she didn’t say I wasn’t going to meet them. I didn’t like it; I was really tired and jumpy. I didn’t know what the problem was.

I sat down in one of the couches and switched on the TV on. Analysts were discussing on CNN, about the hideout of Sadaam Hussein and his search by the U.S Army. BBC was having news about Sadaam too. I got up and went up to my room. I guess I slept off.

“My lonely darling’… I heard Ann’s voice. I don’t know how long I had been sleeping.

I sat up; Pat and Peter were standing behind her.

“Daddy’, Peter called out

“Peter, how are you today?’

“Daddy. I am fine’.

Ann came and sat on the bed beside me.

“Sorry darling, we went out to get some things. I didn’t want to leave them alone at home’. Ann explained.

“Daddy, mummy bought us some toys’.

“Thank you mummy’, I said not really excited.

“Hey, children, now go to your rooms, I think daddy needs rest’, Ann said to the kids.

I nodded, not being able to say anything. When the kids had gone out, Ann turned to me.

“Dan is all well?’

“All is well” I replied.

“See Dan, I am sorry you didn’t meet us at home, it was important we buy those things, we need it for food this night’.

Including the Teddy bear and toys, I thought. There wasn’t anything wrong. She didn’t do anything that needed explanation; I just wasn’t myself that was all.

“It’s okay Ann’. I told her.

“Let me quickly change and go to the kitchen, Okay’. She said and touched my lips with the tip of her finger

While changing her cloth she was telling me things about her work and the shopping they went for, but I was hardly listening, my mind wasn’t thinking anything in particular. At a point, she paused.

“Dan, are you sure you are okay?’

“Sure, I am, I said startled

She looked at me and walked to the door.

“I ….’ she stops, heaved, sighed and left the room.

I got up from the bed and changed into a jogger pants and tee shirt. I went over to the CD player and put in a CD of Fela. Soldier go soldier come played from the speakers.

At a time like this, just for no reasons, I didn’t feel like being with the family. I contemplated going down stairs, but I knew if I didn’t go, the kids will come up. I had to find an excuse for my mood.

“Daddy, you look tired’, Pat said.

“Sure I am’, I replied not explaining further.

Ann looked sharply at me.

“Dan are you sure everything is okay?’

I told her I was tired and was reluctant to say anything further.

“I think you need rest Dan, maybe I should bring your food upstairs?’

“Yes’, I nodded, suddenly in the mood to be alone.

She turned to her work.

“Kids, I guess I take my break for the day” I said and left the kitchen.

“Goodnight daddy’, Pat said.
