Electrical Fire Safety



Many of the recorded fire incidents in the homes and workplaces are caused by electrical faults, accidents or misuse of electrical equipment. Electricity is often overlooked as a possible fire hazard, this maybe because there is no flame.

Caution should always be taken to avoid fire incidence as much as possible. Here are a few tips on how to prevent fire incidences through electrical safety.
Tips on Electricity Safety
  • Always remember to switch off your air-conditioner when not in use
  • Always remember to switch off the Radio, Television, Extension sockets, Water dispenser, Computers, Electrical kettle, jugs, Micro-wave and Refrigerators.
  • Put off all sockets
  • Avoid overloading sockets/ power points
  • If you discover a faulty or damaged socket, quickly call you electrical officer or the person that check your appliances for you.
  • Avoid short circuit in flexible cords
  • Regularly inspect your electrical power cords, ambience, and temperature of the cable and don’t use appliances that have damaged electrical cords or plugs.
Lack of Electrical Safety in Homes and Offices

When you fail to adhere to the above guidelines, there are chances that;
  • It can lead to fire disaster or an outbreak of fire when there is power surge from PHCN. Properties worth millions of naira can be destroyed in such fire outbreak
  • It can lead to loss of vital documents and other relevant information both at home and in offices
  • Bad publicity for companies
  • Threat to lives of occupants of building

What to do when there is Fire Outbreak
  • Do not panic
  • Raise an alarm
  • Switch off the light/power supply from the main source
  • Draw attention of others to the fire without running away or making others panic
  • Run to pick the appropriate Fire extinguisher and release the content while aiming at the base of the fire.
  • Call the fire service men of police for help
