What is The Ideal Age to Marry?
Marriage is the union between a man and a woman leading to the production of children and building a family.
The importance of marriage to an individual, community and the whole world cannot be over-emphasized because it is through marriage that a home, family which turns into community is built from.
Some people believe that a man can get married at any age even above 70 years but a woman above 35 years doesn’t have the chance to be married anymore.
This may not be exactly true as we see a Man of God in Nigeria who in recent years after losing his wife married a 65 years old woman.
However as peculiar as this case maybe, we have heard of several old men, even as old as 70, marrying girls as young as 16 years.
We conducted an opinion poll around Agindigbi, Ikeja area of Lagos to get men to react to the topic, "the right age to get married".
Most of the men we talked to are of the opinion that it is better for a woman to marry at most before the age of 35 years or may never get a man to marry her.
Ambrose (35 years, an Okada Rider) said, “I married my wife when she was 17 years old, we presently have a 2 years old daughter, and my wife is just about 20 years old now. She looks young and very beautiful; I won’t need to marry another wife because she still looks very attractive. Because of our age difference, my wife obeys my instructions, she’s respective and responsible. I cannot marry any woman above my wife’s age. I think it is better for a woman to marry early so that she can raise her kids on time.”
Musa (26 years old, unemployed youth) said, “It doesn’t matter the age of a woman, some women up to the age of 39, 40 years still gets married. Though I married a much younger girl, my wife is just 19 years old now, but there’s nothing wrong if a lady of over 40 years gets married. I think people can marry at whatever age they choose to, as long as it suits them”
Dapo: (26 years old Teacher) said, “The problem why some men stay older before getting married is because they want to acquire riches before they get married. I am 26 years old and married. If I wanted to wait until I get the whole earth before marrying, maybe I won’t ever get married. Marriage is good and marrying early is good too, it helps you to build and develop your family on time. A woman should marry on time”
Segun (33 years Office Clerk) said, “Most of the ladies who are up to the age of 39 and not yet married are usually wild, irresponsible women, if you marry such women; you are ready to die earlier than you are scheduled. It is better to marry a woman you can control. It is better for a woman to marry early, girls as young as 17 years are getting married these days. It shows that they are responsible. Though I am not yet married but I won’t marry woman that is more than 25 years old”
