Category: Entertainment News

Hardworking, Vancouver BC actress Scarlett Bruns, in an exclusive chat with ACKCITY, on Wednesday, 6, 2013 spoke on her career as actress, producer and campaigner for people who struggle with negative body image. In spite of her tight schedules, she said, “Nothing that I do feels like work so I don't really need to schedule my work time separately from my home life it all fits together. I've never really had a problem scheduling anything. I do all my scheduling myself I don't have a personal assistant or anything, so far it's just always worked out.”

We heard you started acting at the age of three, is this true?

Yes, I started in a kids’ day camp, they had a musical theatre program, and I had my first experience on stage.

Are there specific people who have inspired you into acting?

Not really, I started at such a young age that I was too young to be inspired by someone.

Who is your favorite actor/actress?

I love Julia Roberts and Robert DeNiro. My favorite director is Garry Marshall.

How many plays, movies have you done so far?

I don't even know. A lot. Plays probably over 40 and movie maybe 15 or so.

Are you satisfied with the roles you have played so far since the beginning of your career?

I have been very satisfied with the roles; I've had quite a bit of variety. I would love to do an action film.

What has been your biggest achievement in acting?

I can't pinpoint a biggest achievement my favorite role and the one I am most proud of is always my most recent one!

Tell us about your role in “Dreaming in Technicolor

I played a depressed teenager whose escape is her dream that she comes up with and eventually writes about to help other kids with the same illness.

You did “Marly and Me” with an animal actor, tell us about the dog.

He was super sweet and amazingly talent! I love all animals so I was extremely excited to work him.

You will be playing “Natalie Costigan” in a lead role in an upcoming TV series, tell us about the character?

Nat is very independent and strong. She's a really exciting character to play because she doesn't rely on any men in the show; she's totally independent and very smart.

As an actress, director and producer, what are some challenges in filming, particularly in BC, Vancouver? Are there suggestions that you can give on improving filming?

I have never directed before, and currently don't have any interest in directing so I can speak on that. For acting and producing I don't really feel there are challenges that pertain to BC aside for the amount of productions we receive here. But in that actual work BC is a wonderful place, that scenery is very diverse and we have some of the best studios and crew in the world! The only thing that I would change is the current tax incentive system; it would be great if it matched that of Ontario.

In a recent Press Release after Save BC Film, you said people should understand the difference between a tax subsidy and a tax incentive, can you tell us the difference between the two?

Yes. A tax subsidy is the government giving production money to make a movie. A tax incentive is a production company spending money and getting a percentage of it back in taxes.

Are you also an activist?

Not really, I mean I don't go out and protest and don't get involved in political campaigns or anything like that. I support causes that I believe in.

Any plan to go into politics in the future?

Zero, I hate politics (Laughs).

Are there any personal ambitions that you have not yet attained in directing and producing?

Again I don't direct. I would love to have a film that I produce or co-produce to be nominated for an Oscar, but I think everyone in the film industry strives to achieve that!

Mention any special recognition or award that you have received for your acting skills?

The films I have world on have won a few awards and nominations, among them best actress for a variety of my characters. Most recently, “Sundays Child” won best short film at the Las Vegas International Polly Grind Film Festival.

With all these projects you have inline, your acting roles, producing and now your project/campaign “Save BC Film PSA’s project”, how do you manage your time?

Nothing that I do feels like work so I don't really need to schedule my work time separately from my home life it all fits together. I've never really had a problem scheduling anything. I do all my scheduling myself I don't have a personal assistant or anything, s far it's just always worked out.

Are you married?

No I am not married

Give a few tips on how to be a successful actor/actress?

The most important thing is training, honing your skills and making sure you are excellent at your craft. Of course being in a city that has a film school or a film industry is beneficial.

What is your advice for aspiring actors/actresses?

Train! You can never have enough training. I still take acting class regularly and get training / coaching session before every audition. Also if you start having some success surrounds yourself with people and family that will keep you grounded. Remember being an actor is not an overnight success most people train for years before ever booking a role.

You are also currently promoting the cause for people who struggle with negative body image, tell us about this project?

Through my film 'Heart of Dance' I am trying to help raise awareness for eating disorders and positive body image in teens. Recently I worked with Normal in Schools a charity organization that held a silent auction to help raise funds to further their programs. I am also in negotiations to go to the USA to speak to school groups about their programs.
