Buhari is chasing shadows – Jonathan

Category: Nigerian National News

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has lampooned the trial of his National Security Adviser, NSA, Sambo Dasuki over an alleged $2.2bn arms contact by President Muhammadu Buhari, stressing that at no time did he award such a contract for procurement of arms.

He stated unequivocally that most of the corruption allegations being peddled against his administration have been grossly exaggerated.

Buhari had instituted a presidential committee to investigate arms procurement by the Jonathan administration, and findings from its interim report revealed extra budgetary spending to the tune of N643.8 billion and an additional $2.2 billion in the foreign currency component, allegedlycarried out and supervised by Dasuki.

Buhari subsequently ordered the arrest of Dasuki and others indicted in the report.

The former NSA has since refuted the allegations as an orchestrated attempt to subvert a Federal High court’s injunction which granted him leave to travel abroad on medical grounds. He also said all payment for arms was legally approved by Jonathan.
“Nigerians should note that all the services generated the types of equipment needed, sourced suppliers most times and after consideration by the Office of the NSA, the President will approve application for payment.”
Reacting to this allegation, Jonathan speaking at a forum in Washington DC, United States faulted claims that such a transaction took place during his tenure, arguing that the Nigerian economy could not have supported such huge amount of money to be awarded at once.
“At no time did I award a single contract of $2bn for procurement of weapons. Sometimes, I feel sad when people mention these figures. When the president (Buhari) paid official visit to the US, there were some figures that were mentioned that I don’t believe.“He didn’t say my government, he said previous administrations…$150bn is not N150bn. People play politics with very serious issues.”

Jonathan vowed never to join issues with Buhari, explaining further that the alleged missing $59.8m during his administration were just a figment of imagination, as forensic auditors had already proven nothing of such happened during his tenure.
“In Nigeria, if you lose $59.8m in a year, federal and state governments will not pay salaries. Of course we brought international audit teams, forensic auditors and they didn’t see that.
“I wanted to keep away from the public for at least twelve months.”
Explaining the decision of the Federal Government to disregard the court decision to allow Dasuki travel, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, Abubakar Malami vowed that Dasuki’s case would be treated as a national security threat, saying the decision to subvert the court “was in line with public interest.”
