Toddler, Three Others Injured in Lagos Gas Explosion

Category: Lagos News

No fewer than four persons, including a four-year-old girl, sustained varying degree of injuries after a gas explosion occurred in a Lagos community yesterday.

The incident, which recorded no death, occurred at about 3 pm at No. 88, Oworo Road, Oworonsoki, nearby the lagoon where a Bristow helicopter crashed two months ago, but recorded no death.

THISDAY gathered that the explosion occurred from the gas compressor of one of the freezers used at a local pub, gutting not just the building but also affected the perimeter fence of a nearby hotel.

The injured persons were affected when the explosion blew off the roof of the pub and some of the roofing sheets and shingles hit them on the head.

Although initial reports had it that the explosion was a bomb blast, it was soon discovered to be false when emergency workers gained access to the burnt shop.

According to the residents of the area, the explosion took them by surprise, given that the pub was not opened for business at that time.

Rescue agencies like the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and their state counterpart, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the fire service men rushed to the scene to control the situation with the help of the anti-bomb unit of the police force and Rapid Response Squad (RRS).

When contacted, both the state Director, Fire Service Rasaq Fadipe and the South-west spokesman for NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the incident and urged Lagosians to be cautious in using electrical appliances.

Speaking to THISDAY, Farinloye said rescue work was greatly impeded by the rowdy crowd, which made their efforts to carry out a speedy rescue very difficult.

He said: “The explosion partly affected a building next to the pub with serious effects on human beings. Four casualties were injured including a small girl. The cause of the explosion is yet-to-be ascertained.”

Although preliminary findings indicated that it was the gas that exploded, Fadipe said he had requested the anti-bomb squad to rule out any possibility of it being a bomb blast.

He said there was no massive fire outbreak, adding that the Ilupeju fire truck responded adequately, recalling that the agency responded to five other fire incidents between Friday and Saturday.
