Forced into a marriage, she did everything to avoid, 14 -year old, Wasila, confessed she had no choice than to do the unexpected. She wanted to go to school but to her greatest shock and surprise, her father forced her to marry 35 -year old Umaru Sani.
According to Wasila, she plotted how she would run away many times, without luck. So a day came when she did what she thought was the best thing to end her suffering and pains in the hands of a man, old enough to be her father. She laced his food with rat poison, killing the man and four of his friends. When the story got to my desk (Emma Agu), I had a sense of pity for the bereaved, at the same time, I urged people out there to hear her side of the story.
So, we started this campaign to spare her life, using the social media. I called the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Mr Sunday Adelare many times to follow up on the matter.
The happy update on this mind-boggling story is that:
A Nigerian court on Tuesday formally struck out the case against 15-year-old Wasila, accused of killing her 35-year-old husband with rat poison.
Wasila, charged with culpable homicide had faced a possible death sentence if convicted of deliberately lacing a meal she cooked for her husband Umar Sani with rat poison, in the process, killing him and his other four friends.
