Kogi State

Kogi state was created on the 26th of August, 1991 by Gen. Badamasi Ibrahim Babangida during his regime alongside 8 other states. It is called the confluence state because of the meeting point of two popular rivers in the nation (Niger and Benue) and also because the state is located at the central region of Nigeria.

In the 19th century, the name Nigeria was coined by Flora Shaw, while watching two rivers that stretched before her. She called it "Niger Area" due to the fact that one-quarter of the nation is covered by water.

The sixth anniversary of Gen. Babangida's successful coup d'etat witnessed the announcement of nine new states. But since the creation of Kogi state, the leaders have become an ogre on the backs of the citizens giving little or no consideration to the people of the state. The neighbouring states sharing boundaries with Kogi State like Edo state and others has done a lot to transform the states since creation due to competent drivers at the hem of leadership of the states.

Some of the ogres that have driven the state to neaps extinction, like Prince Abubakar Audu 1999-2003. He was sworn-in as governor of the state on 29th May 1999 under ANPP party. Many have argued that prince Audu's achievements was incomparable, but there are many allegations against him over misappropriation of public funds. Immediately after his hand over in 2003, and the constitutional effluxion of his immunity, prince Audu was arrested by the Nigerian Economic and financial Crimes Commission.
Prince Abubakar Audu

He appealed against an unfavourable decision made by the high court in the court of appeal and thereafter headed to the supreme court. His appeal was discharged as irrelevant.

Upon the lapses of the appeal in 2002, the commission invited Prince Abubakar for fresh arraignment in terms of the judgement of the Supreme Court but he fled from Nigeria just to avoid the trial.

The trial of Prince Abubakar took a new turn on March 6, 2015 in Abuja High Court where a banker, Uchenna Agagara, testified. Prince Audu is being prosecuted by the anti- graft agency, the EFCC for offences bordering on breach of trust and misappropriation of public funds to the tune of N10.96 billion. A huge amount enough to feed a state. The EFCC's witness ,Mr Agagara told the court, presided over by Mr Adegbola Adeniyi, that part of the money totalling 926million was lodged into diamond bank account of bulkom Nigeria limited between May 29,2001 and July 23,2003 when prince Audu was the governor of Kogi state.

The people of kogi state after four years of governmental mismanagement under prince Audu longed for a change which brought about change of power from ANPP to PDP by Alh. Ibrahim Idris. But little did we know that it was a case of jumping from frying pan to fire as Alh. Ibrahim's administration was like a non-existent government to the people of kogi state. An administration of eight years soiled in corruption.

On April 2013, Dino Maleye sued Ibrahim Idris over alleged looting and massive misappropriation of state funds. The former lawmaker accused Alh. Idris of squandering N57billion of state's funds during an eight-month period that the supreme court decided that the governor overstayed in office (Sahara reporters, new york,April 30,2013).

After 8years of corrupt administration, Idris made a wise move of imposing his loyalist as a successor to protect him after he left office. This yielded a positive result that brought Alh. Ichalla Idris Wada who is actually dancing to the tune of his "Oga at the top"

I wonder how a man with schizophrenic illness(Mental disorderliness)who was declared unfit to even contest for elections according to a lawsuit filed against him on November 22, 2011 by Mr Emmanuel Abalaka. The affidavit presented by Uchechukwu Clement, a lawyer, stated that. Contrary to claims by Capt. Wada on oath under part B, Article E Question 1 "Capt Wada had at a point been adjudged to be of an unsound mind". That he is actually an un-discharged psychiatric patient of the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan. Which means he didn't undergo full treatment before his father removed him against medical advice.(THE NATION 23/11/2013).

Idris Wada
Since the arrival of Capt. Idris Wada, Kogi state has been in the retrogressive form. Even most of the Igalas complain bitterly about him, they always say " We prefer our mad man there, to any other tribe".

Wada's administration is the worst of all {well what should we expect from a psychiatric patient?}. The second name for his administration is "strike". From university sector down to the primary sector, the teachers and students are the ones suffering the most from this administration. As graduates, no employment, as teachers, meagre or no payment at all.

On February 26th 2015, ASSU Kogi State chapter embarked on an indefinite strike to request for their pending allowances and to improve on some unfavourable working conditions.

The past and present leaders have plunged the state into an abyss of total failure. From a worse administration to a totally worst one. We the kogians await the messiah who will save us from the clutches of these political beasts and restore the faith and glory of our people. But the most difficult question is: Is there such a man?
